Stock Breeding

If you have lived in this country long enough, you possibly share the opinion that it’s kind of hard to find local beef in Bulgaria. One of the explanations is that poultry and pork farms far outnumber buffalo ones.

Neverthelss, stock breeding is a traditional part of the rural sector in Bulgaria. Livestock such as pigs, chicken, sheep, goats, cows are bred at big farms. Apart from these, many people herd their own goats or cows and breed their own hens and ducks thus providing their families with organic milk, eggs and meat. Fishing farms are abundant. In the past, hunting was embraced by Communist Party functionaries and flourished; most of the old game farms have been preserved while new ones have also sprung up. Ostrich and snail farms have opened in recent years.
