Halls of Residence

A rented place or a hall of residence? Most college and university students face the dilemma when looking for a home away from home.

The majority of universities and colleges provide accommodation in double or triple occupancy rooms with a bathroom. The admission process includes social criteria and satisfactory grades. Approximately 100 halls of residence exist around the country; the 70 buildings in Sofia comprise Studentski grad, or Student Town, a residential district famous for its busy night life.

As elsewhere around the world, in Bulgaria, too, halls of residence have a number of advantages: the rent is low; many are located close to campus; and social life abounds. The main shortcoming is a result of the old and outdated facilities as few of the buildings have been refurbished. Not everybody sees the endless partying option Bulgaria’s halls of residence provide as a disadvantage.
