Cinemas

Up until less than a decade ago a must in every city, town or village, cinemas in Bulgaria are now far fewer.

Although many of the cinemas are housed in malls or big cinema multiplexes and attract film lovers with a modern interior, comfy seats, wide aisles and the latest Hollywood blockbusters and action movies, small old-fashioned cinemas exist that will show non-mainstream, art or old films. For a daily programme of the cinemas in Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas and Stara Zagora, log on to www.programata.bg. All foreign films, except some cartoons or other children’s movies, will be in their original language with subtitles.

Sofia hosts two annual film festivals, in November and in March, showcasing the latest produce of local and international talent.
