Television

Channel 1, btv, Nova TV, Diema – you have possibly seen all of these and many more while flipping through the channels in your Bulgarian hotel or home.

The first TV transmission in this country dates back to 1959; the year goes down in history as the beginning of the Bulgarian National Television. In the early 1990s however its hegemony was put to an end and cable and satellite TV providers have since mushroomed ensuring that dozens local, regional and international programmes – with Bulgarian subtitles – reach the majority of households. A switchover to digital TV is due across Bulgaria by the end of 2012.
