High Schools

In Bulgaria, the compulsory education ends at 8th grade (16 years of age). However, after finishing their 7th or 8th grade, most pupils enroll in high schools to get secondary education certificates.

There are three types of secondary education: comprehensive, profile-oriented (languages, sciences, humanities, arts, sports) and technical/vocational schools. Admission in specialised schools is after 7th grade and upon entry exams. The studies cover 4 or 5 years and finish with school-leaving exams.

Most schools are state or municipal-owned yet private ones have caught on as well.
